CUTOFF?

5:30 PM

This cutoff comes 8 hours and 10 minutes after the swim cutoff at 9:20am. So if you beat the swim cutoff at all, that time is even longer. This equiates to ~14mph.

2-3 TIMES PER WEEK

Cycling training should be a mix of trainer rides (to practice cadence) and outdoor rides to practice.. well.. riding outdoors.

HARDEST PART?

TIME IN THE SADDLE

Even for the fastest cyclists, this is the longest part of the day. You're also required to stay several lengths away from other cyclists, so it's lonely too. The mental game here, is simply key to survival.

WHAT GEAR DO

YOU NEED?

A LOT (AND IT'S NOT CHEAP)

Obviously a bike (triathlon bike is best) and safety equipment (helmet, lights, etc.). You'll also need shoes, a trainer, wheels...... Simply put, a lot. And it's not cheap either. Shop the sales to keep your sanity.

EAT?

A LOT - ALL THE TIME

Energy gels, chews, bars, baked potatoes - whatever. You should be ingesting something every 30-45 minutes and drinking electrolytes every 3-5 minutes. Even if it's just a sip.
