An ultra is defined as any race longer than 26.2 miles (a normal marathon). So Ultras range from 27 mile races, to 200+ mile races alike. But when it comes to ultra races, there are 3 big ones everyone drools over.

This race is the oldest 100 mile race in the US. It actually used to be a horse race down the western states trail from Squaw Valley to Auburn California - then, someone did it on foot. It ends, on a high school track with a 30 hour cutoff.

A 106 mile race around Mont Blanc. You get to run through Switzerland, France and Italy all in a day! The course follows a very popular walking trail that takes ~11 days to walk. The top runners though? Just 20 hours.

The oldest ultra marathon in the world covering between 50-55 miles, also happens to be the biggest, with 25,000 entrants in 2019 (compared to 369 for the Western States). It's South Africa's "Superbowl". Enough said.
