After having just completed a two week honeymoon in Greece, it’s safe to say that my wife & I are addicted Greek food and found a dire need for a true, traditional Greek salad recipe (also known as Horiatiki salad).
We ate these things everywhere. We started our trip in Athens (where we had one for lunch) and spent the day treking around “downtown” checking out the Acropolis and Temple of Zeus mainly.
From there, we traveled to Mykonos where we stayed on the north side of the island in Panormos (translates directly to “the most relaxing place on earth”.. probably). More importantly we ate (Greek salads, amongst millions of other things) in town, mainly spending our time in “Little Venice”, which had beautiful views of the windmills.
We ended our (food) journey in Santorini, specifically Imerovigli, where not only did we eat our way into a coma on several occasions.. we did it all at a table looking at what might have been the most unbelievable sunset imaginable.
We ate everything from fresh Octopus, to lamb shanks, and copious amounts of pureed Fava, but the one thing we ate with seemingly every meal, was a Greek salad. One of the things we first noticed (other than how unbelievably fresh everything is) about a traditional Greek salad is the lack (and I mean there’s 0) of lettuce. This might literally be one of the easiest salads to make in the entire world. there are literally 5 ingredients plus oil/salt/pepper.
We asked around to see if there was any sort of “secret” ingredient or method that made the Horiatiki salad the best traditional Greek salad out there, and like most things, this turned out to be an example where simple, just meant better.
